It’s not every day that you find yourself sat in a room listening to some world class athletes talk but then Super League Jersey is not an every day event.
What Is Super League Jersey?
This weekend sees a new and exciting form of triathlon in the heart of St Helier. I can’t wait! The Super League has been travelling around the world and has already been to some amazing destinations and now it’s our island’s turn.
A New Triathlon
This new form of the triathlon is not only spectator friendly but spectators can expect to find themselves fully entrenched in the action. This triathlon is guaranteed to not only get the athletes’ hearts racing but those who are watching the triathlon. This triathlon is shorter, sharper and faster. Now Jersey can put Bergerac to pasture because we are here to show the world just how we can host and support a real sporting event. Jersey could become the most watched triathlon in television history.
Some amazing athletes are competing, including Jersey’s very own Dan Halksworth, our “Pride of Jersey” ;-). Then there is the inspirational Nicola Spirig, who is in the top 15 in the world, just 15 weeks after giving birth. I will never again moan about trying to find the time to exercise.
Other talented triathletes include Jonathan Brownlee and Mario Mola Diaz. Walking down the main street in St Helier earlier I couldn’t help but spy some of their other fantastic athletes. The triathlon has certainly created a buzz and it’s not every day you find yourself stood at a cashpoint next to a world famous athlete.
The overhaul of the triathlon sees the introduction of five different racing formats. The Triple Mix, the rather scary sounding Eliminator (not going to lie but that does make me think of the 90s television programme – Gladiators), Enduro, Equalizer, and Sprint Pursuit. These have all been designed with the global audience who will be watching, in mind. Jersey is staging the Triple Mix (I’m guessing it’s not a nice selection of sweets as in pick and mix) and the Eliminator. The athletes complete all three triathlon disciplines (swim, run, bike), three times with a ten minute break between each race. They have completely smashed the traditional format for a triathlon for races two and three, two starts with a run and three starts with the bike leg.
The swim course is 1 x 300m swim in the calm waters of the marina
The bike course 5km x 1.0km laps. This course begins with athletes leaving the transition and immediately making a U-turn onto the bike course. The athletes then ride past the finish line area and take a straight line of 230m before making a hard-left-hand turn.
The athletes then ride 150m towards the roundabout near the Radisson Blu Hotel and make the turn. I would imagine down here would be the perfect place to observe the action if you are a spectator! Then the athletes ride straight down for 260m along Rue de L’Etau before turning right in La Rue de Carteret. Going down a slight decline for 75m. The athletes then have to make a hard-right hand turn. They then ride in front of the buildings for 170m along the pathway before turning left and heading to transition to complete one lap
Run course: 2.0km Athletes follow the same course as the bike course but staying to the left of the course. On the second lap of the course the runner will run through transition, make the turn at the top of the course and veer left to the finish chute to complete the race.
This is no easy course, there are some real sharp bends and turns. It will test the athletes to the extreme. They will certainly need their wits about them.
The Corporate Races Saturday and Sunday 9am
A chance to go along and cheer on some of our locals!
Race One: Triple Mix (Pursuit Style)
The athletes complete three stages of all their disciplines with a ten minute break between rounds starting from the winner of each stage’s finish time.
Stage 1: 300m swim. 5.5km bike. 2km run.
Stage 2: 2km run. 5.5km bike. 300m swim.
1 x lap swim
5 x lap bike

The first person across the line determines the winner of each stage. The athlete’s start time on the course for each stage, following Stage 1, is based on the finishing time from the previous round. Stage 1 is a group dive start and the following stages are all in pursuit format.
The winner of the Triple Mix is determined by the first athlete across the line in Stage 3
The men’s race kicks off at 13:20pm
The women’s race kicks off at 16:17pm
Race Two: The Eliminator
This race comprises of three rounds of swim-bike-run with a ten minute break between each round. The ten minute break commences at the time the first-place finisher crosses the finish line of the previous round.

Stage 2 – athletes finishing in 11th – 15th place will be eliminated and will not start in Stage 3
Stage 3 – no athletes will be eliminated.
The overall winner of The Eliminator will be the first athlete across the finish line in Stage 3. The distances for each round of this race are 300m swim, 5.5km cycle and 2km run.
The women’s race kicks off at 13:15pm
The men’s race kicks off at 16:15pm
See You There!
It is clearly going to be high-octane stuff and I can’t wait to watch the races! If you are in Jersey then make sure you come down and cheer the athletes. It’s our turn to show the world what a strong sporting culture Jersey has. As well as the triathlon, spectators will find that they are food vans, DJs and art installations. The fan zone will give the whole event an even more dynamic feel! I will be in the crowds biting my nails. I can’t wait!
