This summer in a desperate bid to save money we decided on a staycation. We are under a lot of stress at the moment with us trying to sell our house so that we can move into our new house. We are literally counting the pennies people! However, thanks to Halfords and their suggestions we have been inspired to spend a lot of time camping on the beach!
Camping Adventures
Now I have made no secret of my disastrous camping holiday with Mr C and my subsequent fear of camping. It wasn’t always this way though! As a child we often went camping and I have really fond memories of those holidays. It always felt like I was on an adventure. I used to love reading the Secret Seven and The Famous Five as a child. Therefore, our camping holidays felt like I had wandered straight into an Enid Blyton adventure. Beaches to me were really secret coves where I was convinced the local fisherman was really a diamond smuggler. Yes, I had a somewhat over-active imagination as a child.
Excited To Camp Again!
However, I had such lovely memories of camping that I was excited to try camping again. I had thought that a camping holiday with Mr C would be romantic and this was our choice of a first holiday. We went camping in the New Forest. However, we were not happy campers. What is that saying that my Dad is so fond of? Ahh, yes, “fail to prepare and prepare to fail”. And fail we did. We literally rocked up with a tent and that was it. Yes, we were hopelessly naive and obviously thought our love would keep us warm! It was a miracle that we didn’t end up splitting-up. It was awful. It rained. All. Of. The. Time. I’m not talking a few drips of rain, I’m talking full on monsoon rain. This would have been fine had we bought the proper equipment but we didn’t. We had a tent and some duvets. As you can probably guess the duvets went mouldy, and I swear I was starting to come down with trench foot.
How Halfords Could Have Helped Us
Now that is why I wish that I had known about the Halfords website back then. They do airbeds! How amazing would that have been? That’s not camping that is practically glamping. They also have inflatable pillows (again something we also omitted to bring), camping mats. The list goes on but it’s all there, every single essential that you could need for your camping trip.
The Halfords website has given us the confidence to think that perhaps we could try this camping lark again. Since moving to Jersey we have become more of an outdoor family and our children are very keen to camp. I want them to experience the camping adventures I had as a child. Therefore, we have been breaking them in gently and we have been spending our staycation down on the beach with our little tent. We have been taking a tent to the beach since youngest was a toddler. I’m not sure if Mr C is trying to prepare the children for camping or perhaps it’s more likely me he is trying to prepare? However, so far, so good. The children have loved it. I have loved it! Especially the cooking on a BBQ/campfire. The children also eat far better when they are eating outdoors! We have all loved it because everyone is happy. Apparently, camping on the beach makes miracles happen ;-). I mean what’s not to love about getting outdoors and enjoying the fresh air.
I have come to the conclusion that camping on the beach or near the beach would make for an amazing holiday. There is so much for the children to do from building sandcastles to bodyboarding in the sea. All of the while I get to relax and read a book. Winning. Then there is the food. When you are at the beach you have to eat fish and chips, I mean it’s practically the law. I’m always on the hunt to find mushy peas as good as the ones in Yorkshire so I reckon a holiday trying all of the UK beach campsites would help me with this very important research.
Where to stay if you are a beachgoer
When we went on our first camping holiday we stuck a pin in a map and ended up in the New Forest. No research was involved. This was a bit silly. Nowadays, and especially with children, we appreciate the importance of research. Do you want a campsite with a playground on site, showers etc? When we went to the New Forest we went very basic, as in stick your tent up in the woods and hope a bear doesn’t eat you basic. Now I realise that I like a campsite with some facilities for everyone and I much prefer the beach to the woods.
Halfords have done the research for us so we don’t have to spend ages trying to find the best campsite for beachgoers. Whether you fancy partying in Padstow with Rick Stein. (FYI if you haven’t been to Padstow then you have to try this campsite.) Padstow is a gorgeous part of the UK. I’m talking gorge yourself silly on cream teas gorgeous. The scenery isn’t bad either ;-). Or perhaps you fancy sunning yourself in Suffolk at Haw Wood Farm. There is something for everyone. Halfords have done a great job with their suggestions and I love that at a glance you can also see if there are facilities for the children.
Halfords And Their Camping Havens
Halfords have inspired me and I never even realised that there is such a fabulous campsite just down the road from where my mum and dad live! This would be a perfect way of us visiting family but also allowing us to have our own little adventure at the same time.
If you are thinking of planning a camping holiday then you really should check out Halfords. They have everything you need from planning your camping holiday and buying the essentials through to the best places to stay. There is something for everyone from beachgoer through to a cycling holiday.
What do you reckon? Could you give camping a go?

We’ve not been camping this holiday, rare for us!! Xxx
Oooh you sound a pro! Any tips?
Halfords style camping sound right up my street. I mean inflatable pillows how could you not enjoy it . we have never camped but it is something we have been looking to do as a family I think the kids would love it xx
Yes, that is the main reason for us doing it, the kids would be so happy. Just give me a inflatable pillow and I will be happy too
I love the idea of beach camping! I didn’t even know you could camp on a beach (sheltered life, I know!). It sounds great though that you can get so much helpful equipment these days to help a trip go smoothly. It makes it a much more desirable thing to do, and I think my boys would love the adventure of it all. Thanks for the inspiration, I’m off to look at the Halfords website…
The Halfords website does make it so much easier I have to say! I just wish it had been around on my first camping trip with Mr C. Would have made the whole trip a dream!
We finally went off camping last year. We did the back to basics just on the beach with experienced campers! It’s such a fab thing to do with the kids, our boys loved it and it was one of the best days and nights ever! We need a Halfords in Qatar though to get some of the little camping luxuries though.
Oh it sounds like you had a fab time! And very clever to go with experienced campers 🙂
Wow I had no idea Halfords stocked so much camping stuff! I haven’t been camping since I was a kid but definitely up for giving it a go if there are blow up beds haha. By the beach sounds perfect!
I know! So much fab camping gear 🙂
I’d have never have thought to camp on the beach! Great idea.
It’s so much fun! And any excuse to eat fish and chips 🙂
We had a staycation last year and loves it, it looks like you’ve had a fantastic summer too!
We have had an amazing summer! Even with the rain x
We last went camping 2 years ago. My eldest was 2 and loved it. I’m really hoping we feel brave enough next summer. We now have a 14 month old and just couldn’t face camping this year. I’d love to go to Padstow.
Aww, understandable that you didn’t feel brave enough this year. Perhaps you could do a long weekend next year to see how it goes. Padstow is gorgeous! I would love to go back again soon x
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head! The secret to successful camping is all in the airbed! Lol. We’re not seasoned campers but we fully intend on being next summer when the littlest is that bit older. Thankfully Halfords is just down the road! 🙂
Ooh, well you will be able to stock up on the inflatables then 🙂
We went glamping for the very first time this year & really loved it! If I was to go camping I’d definitely be getting the blow up mattress etc form Halfords because I like my comforts lol You took some gorgeous photos of the girls & the beach!
Yes, the key to good camping is the comfort! I now realise that after my mistakes
I have to admit I had no idea Halfords had such a focus on camping! I’ll have to stop by as, despite refusing to go camping for many years, I’ve finally relented and it looks like we’ll be camping at some point next year. My husband and my 3 year old camped in the garden for the first time a few months ago, and my son absolutely loved it - we thought he’d be back inside by 9pm, but he was fine the whole night. I’m definitely more of a ‘facilities on site’ kind of girl though, so we definitely need to research first!
Ahhh, that’s great that your 3 year-old loved camping in the garden. They find it such an adventure. Head to Halfords for your comforts and then fingers crossed you will be happy too and yes, research is very important!
We love camping and although I use to be a lightweight camper we now have all the mod cons for camping with kids, ha ha! It can be so much fun, although our tent is starting to wear a bit with the weather it has been put through! 🙂
I’m just not sure about camping. On the one hand it always sounds so lovely and many wonderful memories are made and on the other I have the reality of uncomfy sleeping and constant rain in the UK! lol Mich x
Haha! I understand your fears but I think the key is go with comfort (and maybe wine 😉 ) like mattress and pillows etc and to find the right campsite x
I am off to have a look now! We spent three of our nights (out of 18) in a tent in France (our friends haven’t quite finished their gite fully yet!) and I loved it!! Sleeping to the sound of crickets and owls was amazing! Thankfully though we had a lovely shower in the house the next day, plus all our clothes were in their wardrobe - my kind of camping 😉
Haha, that sounds like the perfect way to camp. How lovely that you fell asleep to the sounds of crickets and owls.
You make camping sound like so much fun!
You make camping sound like fun! Would i camp though? I would like to think so but not at a beach (i am scared of water). In my head i would love to go back to basics in a forest campsite somewhere (apart from i would need an airbed, duvet, proper toilets etc). Actually i think i like the idea of glamping better lol!
Haha! Glamping in the forest it is then.
We’ve never been camping . Would love to try it out x
Looks like you had a wonderful time hon and well kitted out most importantly!
We had our first camping trip as a family this summer and the girls loved it. My husband has always loved camping and couldn’t wait to take the girls. It was my first time and thankfully I enjoyed it too. I think the weather makes a massive difference to the experience. We went with friends too and this was great fun, the kids were all entertained. I like the idea of camping more part of our lives x

Ooh we are off camping next week for the first time as a family and I have to admit, I’m a little nervous! If the weather is good then it will be amazing, if not then I dread to think! I am cold 99% of the time so I’m not sure how that will go!! Fish and chips on the beach looks amazing though, as long as we have lots of days like that I’ll be happy!
I would love to take my kids camping when they are a bit older. I had no idea that Halfords had a camping section, will definitely be checking that out when the time comes.
Great post and you’ve really inspired me to want to go camping with the kids! We used to camp quite a bit - but always had air beds - as you say it makes all the difference! Hubby is now quite keen to get a camper van which would really be glamping, but good fun, especially in the rain! We are looking forward to exploring campsites in the UK again - Polzeath in Cornwall was always one of our favourites. I’m with you on beach over forest! x

Oh I had no idea they had all that information available. We went camping for the first time a couple of weeks ago and had a great time although Hubby didn’t come as he hates it. I may see if I can get him to look at the Halfords website too as it may encourage him to agree to come on our next trip x
