In a couple of weeks I will be attempting the ‘Around the Island Walk’. I can’t say that I am relishing the prospect of walking 48.1 miles all in one go. Mr C is optimistic; I can’t help but wonder if he is being naive. After completing the Moonwalk marathon I realise what a big challenge lies ahead of us. Therefore, you would think that the last thing I would be doing is signing up for a yogathon the week before the Around the Island Walk. Yep, I went and signed up for a yogathon. Hang on though! There is logic in my apparent madness…
Why I Am Doing A Yogathon
I have been training hard for the next challenge. I am continuing to run on the treadmill, mixed in with my Be Better Fitness Training. This has been brilliant for building up my physical strength. However, I feel I now need to focus on my mental health as well. Macmillan Cancer Support, Jersey have teamed up with Kalimukti Yoga as a way of promoting wellness within the local community and raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, Jersey. I jumped at the opportunity to take part.
Yoga is brilliant for runners and it can also help with anxiety. I would like to say that I am not an anxious person but my middle finger (yes the swearing finger, oh the irony) on my right hand tells a different story. When I am anxious I pick at my nails. It is a habit that I have had since I was a child. However, this time I have picked so much that I now have a nail infection. Yep, one trip to the doctor later and I have been told that I will lose my nail and if I am lucky then another one will grow back. My faithful friend Gary Growth has also returned and I can’t help but wonder if that is another physical symptom of my anxiety. It appears that even if I am telling myself that I am fine, my body sometimes knows better. It’s frustrating as I really don’t have anything to be anxious about. I have been in far more stressful periods of my life, yet it is now that it appears to be starting to spiral out of control. Therefore, I thought this yogathon might be the perfect answer, to help me get my anxiety back under control.
What Is A Yogathon?

I have paid £25, which is going to Macmillan Cancer Support, Jersey and for that I get a nifty yoga mat and carry strap. I am very excited about this. I can pretend to be a bona fide yogi. For 6 days the idea is that you attend as many yoga classes as you can. There are yoga classes popping up all over the island, in studios, the park and on the beach. I can’t wait! I am hoping that all of this yoga will help me relax and that it will enable me to become more aware of my body and emotions.
Preparing for the Yogathon
It has been a good couple of years since I have attempted yoga. When we lived in Yorkshire I used to attend yoga classes at our local gym. I loved them. I wasn’t particularly good but I found that yoga really helped focus the mind and it taught me to relax. As it has been a while since I have done any yoga I have decided that I should try to prepare for this yogathon. I have found a YouTube series by Yoga with Adriene which is 30 days of yoga. I am going to practise every day and I think this will be the perfect complement to my Be Better Fitness Training and treadmill running.
How To Take Part
If you live in Jersey and like the idea of a yogathon then you can sign up on the Macmillan Cancer Support, Jersey page. The yogathon takes place from Sunday 18th June to Friday 23rd June. I can’t wait to get started. Fingers crossed this will help make the walk easier and that it will help with my anxiety too.
Have you ever tried yoga? How did you find it?

This is such a fab idea, Emma! I used to love Yoga but haven’t done it in so long either, this is a wonderful cause to get you back to yoga! It was a wonderful idea by the Macmillan Cancer Support to raise funds & awareness. Best of luck to you!
I’ve never heard of a yogatone before but it sounds like a great idea for you. I hope it helps you to find that inner peace and put the anxiety to bed. Oh and best of luck with the whole island walk too, you are a trooper! Mich x
I used to do yoga many many years ago but have just become so lazy these days. Good luck on both challenges- the 48 miles sound crazy!! x
I love the sounds of this Emma. I’m a really anxious person and I’ve heard how yoga can really make a difference. Doing it for such a brilliant cause, that has a special place in my heart would definitely be the kick to make me start. Good luck I’m sure you will be amazing x
What a brilliant idea, and a very worthy cause (well, two worthy causes if you count your own health too!). I’m thinking of trying yoga to help with my back pain, but I must admit to being afraid of taking the first steps. You are an inspiration!
Oh Carol, you must try it for your back! My mum really suffers with her back and swears by yoga
I should, I know, but I’m in so much pain at the moment just from standing up, I’m really scared to make it worse! But I will, bit my bit. I’ll maybe look at the Youtube channel you mentioned as a start x
This sounds like a great. Yoga is definitely not just about the physical challenge but also the mental one too. Focusing the mind and breathing exercises are all beneficial for reducing stress and anxiety xxx you go girl xx
This is such a good idea and will be a very different experience to your MoonWalk Emma! I’ve never got that into Yoga, as I’m more of a ‘sweat it out’ type of person, but I know it can be very relaxing and always think I should give it another go! I know it’s supposed to be so good for you too. Can’t wait to see how you get on. xx
This is such a good idea, I didn’t yoga a while back and it’s something that I am keen on getting back to. I can imagine it will be very relaxing.
Hi Emma, thanks for the mention! We hope you have a fab time at the Yogathon - see you there! Calli, Co-Founder of Kalimukti Yoga
I’m loving the yogathon so far! Really loved trying yoga outdoors too. Brilliant 🙂
