Why I Am Doing A Yogathon With Macmillan Cancer Support, Jersey

June 11, 2017

In a couple of weeks I will be attempting the ‘Around the Island Walk’. I can’t say that I am relishing the prospect of walking 48.1 miles all in one go. Mr C is optimistic; I can’t help but wonder if he is being naive. After completing the Moonwalk marathon I realise what a big challenge lies ahead of us. Therefore, you would think that the last thing I would be doing is signing up for a yogathon the week before the Around the Island Walk. Yep, I went and signed up for a yogathon. Hang on though! There is logic in my apparent madness…

Why I Am Doing A Yogathon

I have been training hard for the next challenge. I am continuing to run on the treadmill, mixed in with my Be Better Fitness Training. This has been brilliant for building up my physical strength. However, I feel I now need to focus on my mental health as well. Macmillan Cancer Support, Jersey have teamed up with Kalimukti Yoga as a way of promoting wellness within the local community and raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support, Jersey. I jumped at the opportunity to take part.

Yoga is brilliant for runners and it can also help with anxiety. I would like to say that I am not an anxious person but my middle finger (yes the swearing finger, oh the irony) on my right hand tells a different story. When I am anxious I pick at my nails. It is a habit that I have had since I was a child. However, this time I have picked so much that I now have a nail infection. Yep, one trip to the doctor later and I have been told that I will lose my nail and if I am lucky then another one will grow back. My faithful friend Gary Growth has also returned and I can’t help but wonder if that is another physical symptom of my anxiety. It appears that even if I am telling myself that I am fine, my body sometimes knows better. It’s frustrating as I really don’t have anything to be anxious about. I have been in far more stressful periods of my life, yet it is now that it appears to be starting to spiral out of control. Therefore, I thought this yogathon might be the perfect answer, to help me get my anxiety back under control.

What Is A Yogathon?

I have paid £25, which is going to Macmillan Cancer Support, Jersey and for that I get a nifty yoga mat and carry strap. I am very excited about this. I can pretend to be a bona fide yogi. For 6 days the idea is that you attend as many yoga classes as you can. There are yoga classes popping up all over the island, in studios, the park and on the beach. I can’t wait! I am hoping that all of this yoga will help me relax and that it will enable me to become more aware of my body and emotions.

Preparing for the Yogathon

It has been a good couple of years since I have attempted yoga. When we lived in Yorkshire I used to attend yoga classes at our local gym. I loved them. I wasn’t particularly good but I found that yoga really helped focus the mind and it taught me to relax. As it has been a while since I have done any yoga I have decided that I should try to prepare for this yogathon. I have found a YouTube series by Yoga with Adriene which is 30 days of yoga. I am going to practise every day and I think this will be the perfect complement to my Be Better Fitness Training and treadmill running.

How To Take Part

If you live in Jersey and like the idea of a yogathon then you can sign up on the Macmillan Cancer Support, Jersey page. The yogathon takes place from Sunday 18th June to Friday 23rd June. I can’t wait to get started. Fingers crossed this will help make the walk easier and that it will help with my anxiety too.

Have you ever tried yoga? How did you find it?

This is such a fab idea, Emma! I used to love Yoga but haven’t done it in so long either, this is a wonderful cause to get you back to yoga! It was a wonderful idea by the Macmillan Cancer Support to raise funds & awareness. Best of luck to you!

I love the sounds of this Emma. I’m a really anxious person and I’ve heard how yoga can really make a difference. Doing it for such a brilliant cause, that has a special place in my heart would definitely be the kick to make me start. Good luck I’m sure you will be amazing x

What a brilliant idea, and a very worthy cause (well, two worthy causes if you count your own health too!). I’m thinking of trying yoga to help with my back pain, but I must admit to being afraid of taking the first steps. You are an inspiration!

Oh Carol, you must try it for your back! My mum really suffers with her back and swears by yoga

I should, I know, but I’m in so much pain at the moment just from standing up, I’m really scared to make it worse! But I will, bit my bit. I’ll maybe look at the Youtube channel you mentioned as a start x

This sounds like a great. Yoga is definitely not just about the physical challenge but also the mental one too. Focusing the mind and breathing exercises are all beneficial for reducing stress and anxiety xxx you go girl xx

This is such a good idea and will be a very different experience to your MoonWalk Emma! I’ve never got that into Yoga, as I’m more of a ‘sweat it out’ type of person, but I know it can be very relaxing and always think I should give it another go! I know it’s supposed to be so good for you too. Can’t wait to see how you get on. xx

This is such a good idea, I didn’t yoga a while back and it’s something that I am keen on getting back to. I can imagine it will be very relaxing.

  • Are you looking for an easy summer read? A book that you can throw in your suitcase and take on your holibobs with you? Why Mummy Swears by Gill Sims is just the ticket. This might be a fabulously funny read but it still contains some spiky observations on a working woman's place in society and marriage. Kick back, open this book and be prepared to laugh from start to finish. Read my review to find out more. Link in profile. (Disclaimer - I was gifted this book so I could review it for the Mumsnet Book Club) .

  • *The sober path! 101 days sober*
101 days ago I decided to give up alcohol for 100 days. Not because I considered myself to have a drinking problem but because I decided I wanted a break from it. I was worried that for the last couple of years I couldn't remember a weekend when I hadn't had wine. I was worried that the wine had become my weekend treat, my go to for when I was stressed and my go to for when I wanted to celebrate. Clever marketing makes us see wine as this magical elixir and I wanted to find out what happened when I removed it. Did I lose my sparkle?🎉 I've written a blog post that will go live later this week but in the meantime I want to share that 1) I didn't get that sparkly BOTOX shizz that everyone talks about.🙄 2) I didn't lose weight, I put it on. How is that even possible? 3) And this is the most important one - I have changed my whole thinking towards wine😎. So outwardly there is no difference but inwardly there are some changes. It's made me realise lots of things about myself and I really think that everyone should give up the ole booze for three months. You never know what you might learn and unlike me you might get the sparkly skin. 101 days sober has taught me that I can still get the party started without the wine. 🎊Cheers to that🎊.

  • This one turns 9 tomorrow and I'm feeling a little emosh. Where have those 9 years gone? It only seems like yesterday when we were bringing her home from the hospital and now she is 9 going on 19. Oldest who is master of the eye roll👀. Oldest who is hilarious and far too quick-witted🤣. Oldest who is caring, loyal and creative. 😍 🎉Happy Birthday🎉 Now if time could stop moving quite so quickly.🕝 .

  • When I first started dating Mr C I was a vegetarian. I would force feed him tofu curry and he would try not to vomit. We were both fairly awful cooks and as a result we would often go to our local @pizzaexpress for a romantic/eat all the carbs before we hit the bars date. I loved the Leeds Pizza Express. It was under the railway arches, right behind the Corn Exhange, and had a really cool vibe. It didn't have much of a view though. 15 years later and nothing much has changed, we still love a Pizza Express and I'm a vegetarian again. However, there have been two little changes - 1) We now have two lovely children and as a result romance has gone out of the window. Hard to get that romantic vibe going when you are ducking flying dough balls. 2) The view has changed. That view has to be one of the best views from a Pizza Express. 😍 FYI this is not an ad for Pizza Express, I just love pizza and that view. Ps can you tell I'm eating really healthy at the moment? This is the second Instagram post about food this week 😂 .

  • I think blue might be my favourite colour 💙 That little island you can see is actually a Second World War German Bunker and nestled in there is Faulkner Fisheries. You can go and choose your fish and they will barbecue it for you there and then. You can even have your fish with a side of freshly dug Jersey Royals. Then you choose your picnic table and enjoy your glorious meal with a view of the Atlantic ocean. It doesn't get much better than that. #theislandbreak #visitjersey🇯🇪 #visitjerseyci #jerseyci #vitaminsea #beachlifevibes #seascape #sea_sky_nature #nofilterneeded
  • This week has been rather higgledy-piggledy and stressful, it feels like we haven't stopped. That's why I decided we all needed a lazy-but-lovely Sunday lunch at the beach🏖. I rustled up a salad and then added some @higgidy goodies (gifted). The girls and Mr C feasted on Chorizo Frittata & BBQ Pork Sausage Rolls (pictured) 😍 and I devoured the Vintage Cheddar Rolls & gorgeous Welsh Goat's Cheese & Leek Frittata. It was a scrumptious lunch and it couldn't have been easier. I've realised that we need to slow down more (easier said than done though) and that we need to relish our weekends. Here's to more slow and sunny weekends.🌞

  • Signs that summer has arrived
- No sleep, ever. The children refuse to sleep. And when you finally make it to bed you are too hot to sleep.
- Mr C lives in his shorts and flip-flops (even when it's raining)
- Mr C takes up residence next to the BBQ (even when it's raining). For the next 2 months he will be married to that BBQ.
- My children replace all meals with ice-cream 🍦🍦
- I lose my sunglasses all of the sodding time.😎
- But you are all very, very happy because the sun is finally shining! I do love summer and I've written a post all about it (link in profile). I would write more but I'm so very tired.....I blame summer 😉 .

  • I did not sleep well last night, but is anyone in this heat? When I went to the make-up counter - on my never-ending hunt for perfect foundation - the lady asked if I would like anything for the dark circles around my eyes 🤣👀. I told her I had children and she said no more. Despite my lack of sleep (and the fact that it was a grey and muggy day) I went for a run and fell in love with this house 😍 I then did a HIIT session and felt 🤢 I'm not at the stage of enjoying exercise yet 🤣 but it sets me up for the day and I'm then able to get on with my work 💪 We won't mention the fact that my legs are killing, especially the thighs. Walking up stairs is a joy 🤣 But no pain, no gain-right? .
