I have now been blogging for three months. I started this blog on the 5th January 2016 with a rather bland post about wellies. It was clearly inspired by the never-ending rain we were having. It must have rained every day that month. In fact, in January, Jersey was declared the wettest month on record. This continual rain lasted well into February and as a result my little blog became my lifeline. It kept me sane when the rain was hammering at our door; it kept me sane when the wind sent a tree crashing down narrowly missing our car, (you can read that post here), and it kept me sane when Youngest was having another attack of the Kanyes (read about it here).
Why did I start this blog?
It was the usual cliché of new year and new beginnings. This blog represented something for me. At the time I didn’t appreciate how giving up my career would leave me feeling a little lost and lacking in confidence. I went from full-time working Mum with friends and family close-by to a stay at home Mum living in a different country and knowing no one. Many of my friends didn’t understand how I could give up my career, some even told me that I would regret it. For a while I agonised over whether they had been right. Before, I had spent my time confidently teaching classes of 30 plus children and giving presentations to 40 plus teachers. Now I found myself struggling to say hello to anyone on a morning.
There have been some days where I have felt totally alone.
I’m not saying this for sympathy. I appreciate that the whole nature of being a stay at home Mum can be pretty isolating. You can lose a sense of who you are as a person. This blog was my way of rediscovering me. Now everyday I have at least couple of hours where I can do something for me.
What do I love about blogging?
There are so many things to love about blogging:
- It’s cathartic. Being able to write helps you put everything into perspective and it helps you express yourself. I am known for bottling things up and not saying what I really mean.
- The people. Long before I started this blog I loved to read other blogs. There are so many fantastic blogs out there including Mummy of Boy Girl Twins whose blog is super stylish and a blog I have always loved reading. I have also discovered Aby from You Baby Me Mummy, who was really supportive when I first started out, has a great blogging series and has just started a great Youtube channel. In my first month of blogging I discovered Live Love Blog. A fantastic online magazine for newbie bloggers with loads of new tips. Through that I signed up for a mentoring scheme and this introduced me to Amy and her fantastic blog Mr and Mrs T plus three. Amy’s blog is really one to aspire to, I love her photography. I have only just started the mentoring scheme but already it has really helped me improve my blog. Amy has been so supportive and is teaching me everything about SEO through to the importance of using H2 in your posts. Amy also puts up with me asking so many random and probably very stupid questions. She is always so happy to help and I feel very lucky to have found such lovely bloggers who are very supportive. It is really lovely to be part of that community. Bloggers rock!
- It’s empowering. I am in control of my blog and I decide what goes on it. I have loved creating my blog and deciding its look. Not bad for someone who is a complete techno phobe. Creating this blog has been a real confidence booster. I now feel more confident in my everyday life too. Blogging really has allowed me to be me again! Sorry, that is a bit cheesy! Who knows maybe I will embrace the selfie next.
- Comments. When someone takes the time to comment on my blog it really makes my day and I love to read everyone’s thoughts.
- Retweets. When someone takes the time to share my blog with other people is a lovely way of sharing the love 🙂
- Collaborating with others. I love working with others. I have really enjoyed working with Tots100 and I am completely over the moon to now be a Huffington Post blogger and last night I went to my first ever supper club. All as a result of my blog!
- It has helped me to love where I live. Taking photos for the blog and finding new places to visit has helped me realise how lucky I am to live in such a beautiful part of the world. Don’t worry Yorkshire you will always have a place in my heart 😉
What I wish I had known before I started to blog
- It’s addictive. Like really addictive. You find yourself carrying notebooks to jot down ideas when they strike. Everyday out becomes a photo opportunity. Sometimes you have to remind yourself not to become so immersed in it all.
- Trolls. Not the cuddly sort. The soulless sort. Just ignore them.
- Time consuming. It takes a lot of time to run a blog and some people won’t understand this.
- You should go self-hosted from the start. Moving to self-hosted meant I lost some of my posts. This stress could have been avoided.
- Not everyone will be supportive. Some people won’t understand why you blog, only tell those that you trust. Then when you feel more confident and when you have grown your blog you can tell everyone. I am a long way from telling everyone in my ‘real’ life.
The nature of blogging seems to suit me. I am not someone who can sit on her laurels. I am unable to spend an evening just watching TV. I am useless at watching a film as I normally get bored within the first 15 minutes. I have to keep busy and I like to be always learning which is why blogging is perfect for me. It is something that I am able to fit in around the kids but it also fulfils my need to be creative and keep busy. When I left teaching and moved to Jersey I felt like I had lost my voice.
Now blogging has given me my voice back and I’m shouting for the world to hear.
Do you blog? If so why?

Wow you have done so well in such a short time!
I only started mine recently, but am really enjoying it. I get such a buzz from making people laugh, it’s brilliant when I get a positive comment or a retweet 🙂
It is the best feeling isn’t it! Thanks for your lovely comment 🙂 x
Great post, could relate to all of your points and good advice - particularly to us newbies out there. 🙂
Oh great. I am glad that you liked it and found it useful 🙂 x
Such a great post. I started blogging in January too, and have recently become a SAHM, so this really resonates with me. Writing is a completely new thing for me, and I am really enjoying it.

Thanks for your comment, I am glad that you enjoyed it. I think writing really offers us something valuable and can help us stay at home mums make connections which is always good!
You know I love your blog and you are doing so well. I nominated you recently as I really think your blog will go far. Thanks for the mention, I am so glad to have helped. Always here if you get stuck. xx

Awww thanks lovely and wow thank you so much for the nomination. I also nominated you too. That has made my day! xx
This is great and had me nodding along in agreement! The mentoring sounds really interesting, I’m going to check that out.
Brilliant post! I too am new to blogging and started it for the same reasons as you and I totally love it! I have signed up for the mentoring scheme and can’t wait until I can work with another blogger. You have achieved so much already, well done you! I agree with the self hosted thing, I did mine after a month of started and was lucky not to loose anything. x #MarvMondays

You will love the metoring scheme. I have learnt so much from it!
Like you, moving to a new country and becoming a SAHM. Getting pregnant with my second child. And needing to do something for me. Oh and my friend did it so it was part of the “if you can do it so can I mentality!”
#MArvMondays
Haha, yes I too have a friend that used to blog and I thought if she could do it then so can I. Friends can be a great motivator! 🙂
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head here. Blogging should come with a warning about how addictive and time consuming it is! I’ve been blogging for three years now and when I look back at those early posts I’m proud of how far we’ve comex #marvmondays

Wow three years. That is brilliant and really reassuring that you still love it as much now as you did then 🙂
Wow you amazing Huff Post blogger. I have never dared try that and so need to one day. You have done brilliantly and I was nodding away at all your points. Hope you haven’t had much trolling? I’m lucky that has never happened to me: nasty. Keep at it lovely; your’re doing a brill job xx #marvmondays

Thank you lovely. I think I was just lucky with the huffington post! I have only had the one troll, who didn’t like me sounding feminist! I decided that he was the one with the problem and just ignored him!
I have been blogging for almost 5 years and it is now my full time job. I hate it that most people think I am just sitting at home do nothing, when I am often working 12 hour days! #KCACOLS
Wow that is amazing that blogging is your full-time job and I can only imagine how busy you must be! Do you love it though?
I really feel your enthusiasm through your posts and you have definitely captured the spirit of why it’s so great to blog. Well done on your achievements! That’s pretty amazing for such a short time blogger 🙂 #MarvMondays

Thanks, I am glad you enjoyed it! I look forward to reading your blog too 🙂
It was interesting to read this and I found myself agreeing to the points you made. You have achieved such a lot since January! I am sure your blog will continue to thrive 🙂 #KCACOLS

Thank you Sara! I am really enjoying it 🙂
I’m still amazed that you’ve only been at this such a short space of time - when I discovered your blog I thought you’d been going ages! Your posts are all so well written -I really enjoy reading them all. I started my blog for similar reasons, and have found so many of the same positives from it - it’s given me a confidence that I didn’t have before, and a focus that I’m finding really motivating in every area of my life. I love it!
I agree it really is motivating in every area of life! I think it helps that I have always enjoyed writing and I have always spent my spare time writing and I have always loved reading lots of blogs etc! Also the mentor scheme has been such a big help too. Thanks for your really kind comment x
I started my current blog last month and am really enjoying writing anonymously. Basically I write about my ex-husband without using his name or telling him haha. It’s very cathartic and I love getting feedback #KCACOLS

It really is so very, very addictive - there’s always something to be writing / coding / promoting! Your blog is looking amazing already, and I’m sure it will only go from strength to strength 🙂
Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next Sunday x

Thanks Jess! Proof that it is addictive is that I should be doing the housework right now but instead I am on here - whoops! 🙂
Totally agree with all of your points! It is addictive and also empowering 🙂
It really is isn’t it!
It really is so time consuming, and people don’t realize that. I love that you haven’t told everyone in your real life. I haven’t either, partly because I have some real life trolls and partly because I’m just not ready to share it with them. Glad I am not alone! #kcacols
Oh no I am sorry to hear about your real life trolls 🙁 It is nice to keep something to yourself though isn’t it 🙂 x
I recently started blogging as well and can relate to a lot of the points that you make. I started my blog so I could have something of my own outside of work and outside of being a mom. I also completely understand how you would feel isolated being a stay at home mom. I was home with my son for a while and it can definitely be lonely. It’s amazing that you’ve found such a community to help you through. #KCACOLS
Nicole @ The Professional Mom Project recently posted…Baked Mac and Cheese
Thanks Nicole, the blogging community has been amazing and so supportive. Such a lovely bunch of people 🙂
I blog because staying at home with 3 children under 5 all day every day is lonely. My partner helps out his friends doing bits and bobs so will be out a few days a week. It’s a chance to read gossip basically.
#KCACOLS
Haha, I think you might have hit the nail on the head there. It is a really good chance to gossip. No wonder I love it 😉
Blogging truly is so addictive-I think about it so often, and often find myself saying “Wait right there, let me take a photo for the blog!” Haha
But, you are so right. I too, as a SAHM, have felt alone, and blogging is such a wonderful way to connect to people from around the GLOBE, right from your living room. You have come so far! Keep going <3 #KCACOLS
