Spring is in the air (nearly)

Yesterday saw our little island being hit by Storm Imogen which resulted in chaos with the main road into and out of St Helier being closed with massive waves crashing over the sea walls and onto the roads. Several trees came down and there was a lot of debris on the road. The school run was very interesting and felt a little like an assault course at times. Mother Nature was reminding us that January might be over but we are still not out of winter yet. However the start of February does bring the promise of spring and despite the poor weather I can feel us marching towards a new season.

Spring is one of my favourite seasons and I find myself changing the house to fit in with it. One of the first things I do is to update my seasons tray, clearing out the grey candle holders and fir cones and replacing with fresh flowers and lots of pinks and yellows.

For me spring means a clear out and general declutter. During the winter I like to have lots of knick knacks around to brighten the gloom and enough candles to light up a church. However, the start of longer days means that I can declutter and let light back into the house and blowing away the gloom. For me spring signals a new start. I always find January a bit of a hard slog and I welcome spring and its promise of fresh starts.

Spring is not only about sorting the house out but also myself but really the two go hand in hand. I find that the whole act of springifying the house very therapeutic. It’s about going through the piles of newspapers and magazines and clearing them out and letting go of all the old rubbish that you have accumulated over the winter months. It’s about lifting up the settee and cleaning it properly so that nothing, not even a lego man, lurks underneath. It’s about really scrubbing clean the kitchen, removing all of the tins from the cupboards and wiping them down, cleaning the oven and clearing out the fridge.

It takes an age and it isn’t interesting but it does mean that I can switch off and by the time I’ve finished the house will be clear of clutter, the surfaces will be sparkling and my mind will be clear.

In the house there will more yellow. I love yellow, it is such a happy colour that can’t fail to make you smile and as a result have painted one of the walls in our dining room a very vibrant yellow to go with my yellow and grey theme. Spring will see me finishing this space with some perfect spring accessories and Sainsbury’s has just the range. Their new Copenhagen range is perfect for Scandi hipsters wannabes (hands-up that’s me) and even more perfect is that it is yellow and grey. It was like it was personally designed for our house. Here are my top picks that I am swooning over;

Sainsbury’s Grey Copenhagen Runner

This grey runner would look perfect on a white dining room table and would be a nice contrast against the yellow wall. Also the print is very scandi and stylish. This is so verstatile in grey that it won’t date.

Price £12

Sainsbury’s Copenhagen 4 Napkin Pack

Perfect for everyday use or for a dinner party. These napkins with their bold and stylish print will be a stunning addition to any table.

Price £6

Sainsbury’s Copenhagen Stacking Mug

As you are aware our living space is all open plan and this is perfect for our grey kitchen, with the yellow linking it back to the dining room. These are so funky that they would look perfect on our kitchen counter.

Price £10

So what do you think of my scandi picks? I think that they are just the swedest!

*I apologise for that poor pun and for using the word ‘springifying’ earlier in the post, which isn’t an actual word. But I think it does sum up the act of spring cleaning very well!*
