Geocaching on Jersey

I had been reading on a lot of blogs about geocaching. I thought that it sounded like a lot of fun but had assumed that geocaching was something that would not be available on Jersey. Well I was very wrong. After some investigation I realised that there were indeed many geocaches hiding on Jersey.

For those of you that don’t know what geocaching is -

I would describe it as the hunting of “treasure” or hidden object (to us adults), using the gps on your phone.

It is a really good idea as it encourages you and your children to get walking in all sorts of weather. Also geocaching might mean that you discover new areas of interest. This was certainly the case for us last week when we decided to go geocaching in St Brelades Bay.

As you can see it was a pretty murky and grey day but this did not deter the kids who were so excited to find the treasure. I struggled to keep up with them because they were going at such a pace.

I may have looked longingly at the Crab Shack restaurant when we zoomed past. Some people say that this unassuming restaurant does the best fish and chips on the island. I am a very big fan of their big mugs of coffee.

At first we thought we were being taken towards the church but suddenly our path veered off.

It took us towards a part of the beach that we had never explored before.

We found ourselves weaving through the fishing boats before we ended up at a path that we didn’t even know existed. We climbed up the steep path.

Admiring the rough sea below.

We arrived at our destination and despite searching for ages we could find no sign of the geocache. It was very exposed up there so perhaps it had been blown away or washed away.

We didn’t mind as we were able to enjoy the views. That house down there used to be Nigel Mansell’s house. Apparently it has just sold for 11 million! After we stopped staring in awe at the grand houses we decided to have a go at finding another geocache.

It took us back down to the beach and then towards the church.

Weaving our way back through the fishing boats.

We then went through the church yard. Don’t you like this lamplight? It always makes me think of Narnia and Mr Tumnus.

This has to be a church with one of the best views. I would imagine that it would be an amazing place to get married in.

We then found ourselves climing up another unknown path. It was a little steep for the girls but we carried on pressing forward.

Stopping every now and again to admire the views. We then arrived at our destination.

This time we were successful! We found the geocache. We filled in the log book and then put it back in its hiding place for someone else to find.

We then hurried back to our car as the sky threatened to rain.

I would really recommend having a go at geocaching. It was really good fun and a great way of getting out and about and exploring :-)

Have you ever tried geocaching? If so how did you get on?

  1. We’ve only geocached by accident. Spotting the containers while out walking. One day, I will get organized and download an app. Yours looks a great walk and abulous views, of course. #CountryKids

  2. Geocaching sounds like great fun, and it’s fab that it’s helped you find some new places of Jersey that you’d never explored before. I’ve always wanted to take the kids out geocaching and never really got around to it. I bet the girls want to go back to the first geocache on a friendlier day to try and find it again, from what I understand some can be very difficult to find. Thanks for linking up with me on #CountryKids.

  4. What a lovely views you had on your walk and I love the lamp in the church - I can imagine it would look very Narnia-like if there was snow on the ground too. I’ve not yet taken the girls geocaching but it’s something I’d like to try with them at some stage. Glad you had fun finding one :-)

  5. Yeay! You did it and successful too! Well done! What beautiful scenery you have, and yes, the place looks at bit Narnia too. And the 11 m. house! Wow! Can you imagine living in such place? That’s just crazy! I love your quote - it is what geo-caching is all about. Well done again! :) x

  6. We’ve been a couple of times. There is one locally that’s really creepy. It’s called the ghostly cache and it’s a skull hidden in a tree. Stunning scenery you have over on Jersey! Sarah #WhateverTheWeather
